HEY KIDS, COME SAILING WITH YOUR FRIENDS!

Get out on the water this summer and learn to sail on a big boat!

The Great Lakes Youth Sailing Academy serves teens, age 14-19, in the Chicago area out of conveniently located Monroe Harbor. Our training vessel is the well known Nelson Marek 40, Tango, 3 time winner of the SSYC’s Queen’s Cup race and 2018 Sect 3 winner of the Race to Mackinac. Your instructors include 3 Race to Mackinac champions, 2 of whom are members of the Island Goat Society (they’ve sailed in over 25 Mac races).

CURRICULUM

Our curriculum was developed with three things in mind – safety, learning to work together as a crew and having fun. While we have tailored the program to students who have had training on Opti’s, 420’s and smaller boats, we welcome students who are new to sailing and encourage more advanced sailors to join.

TYPICAL DAY

Students will learn pre-sail planning, safety checks, rigging, sail trim and crew responsibilities in an exciting and challenging atmosphere. GLYSA will utilize online resources such as US Sailing “Safety at Sea” course and North Sails “Let’s Talk Sail Trim” to prepare our young sailors for their days on the lake.

TUITION

Purchase classes by single or multi-day packages. Our goal is to make your student’s first big boat experience affordable and fun. We have scholarships to provide access to the program.  And there are sibling discounts and discounts for students who refer new students.

OUR VESSEL, TANGO

WE LOOK FORWARD TO SAILING WITH YOU ON TANGO

A note about safety.

Job #1 is to keep things safe for students and instructors.

On the water, our young sailors will focus on learning boat safety, and proper boat handling skills. Before students set foot on Tango, they will learn Safety at Sea, important terminology, how to wear a PFD, crew roles and responsibilities. We ask that students be 14 years or over, be able to pass a basic swim test and agree to learn the online materials provided. Upon registration, participants will be required to sign a liability waiver. GLYSA is insured by the Burgee Program for Sailing Schools through Chubb Insurance.
